I am a 22 year old transfer student at IUPUI. I was born and raised in a small town called Newburgh, IN. I have played sports all of my life including football, basketball, and baseball. After my senior year I signed to play college baseball at Kankakee Community College in Kankakee, IL. I ran into a lot of trouble with my UCL and had to do months of therapy with an Occupational Therapist. After being at IUPUI for 3 years I decided to get my bachelors in Exercise Science to go into Cardiac Rehab.
Experiences
-
The biggest experience I had that made me want to pursue a career in exercise science was when I got a minor tear in my UCL from baseball. I received 3 months of therapy with an OT specialist. When I went to these sessions I would also ask him what it was like being an OT and I thought it was so interesting. He told me he gets to work with lots of baseball players that have similar injuries to me and help them return hopefully stronger than before they were injured. I thought that was amazing and definitely wanted to go into exercise science to see what it offered me. In the end I found Cardiac Rehab was my passion.
-
A mentor I have had in my life is Reece Rounder. He has always coached me throughout my years of baseball and was actually my summer baseball coach when my injury happened. He was also the OT I worked with at the time. He taught me all about OT and everything he does and how great it is. He also helped me pick a school and helps me with classes and questions I have on how to get to his level of expertise. If I never would have met him or worked with him I am not sure what I would be doing right now or what career I would be pursuing.
-
I participated in INShape IUPUI where I was given the opportunity in the form of an internship as a personal trainer with a client at NIFS.
-
I participated in Motor Activity Clinic at IUPUI. I was given the opportunity to train a young client with Spastic Cerebral Palsy.
My Major and Career Goals
Major
-
Exercise Science
-
Cardio Rehab
-
Get my CPT and EPC
I chose this because I find joy from helping others and I feel like being able to help others recover from their injuries and set backs would be the best job I could have. My family has an extensive history of heart problems and that made me want to pursue Cardiac Rehab to help people who are experiencing the same hurt I did.
Career Goals
-
Practice in an Outpatient facility that offers professional and personal growth.
-
Practice in an environment that offers the opportunities for career growth.
These goals are important to me because I want to be able to grow in my practice and personally. I also want to be able to practice that is constantly developing and getting better.
